Brief periods of reconstruction have been documented for the Temple of Bel, over the period AD 80-120 and again in 1964 (Browning, 107). Currently, the site of Palmyra is under threat as a result of the Syrian civil war. Bouts of fighting, including a recent shelling incident, have damaged portions of the Temple of Bel. Further damage is expected at Palmyra and other archaeological sites in the region unless the political situation is resolved.
